Don't know if this will be applicable to you, but you never know..
Many moons ago, I rebuilt the 4 cyl engine in my Toyota 4X4. I completely
dismantled and then sent the block away to be hot tanked, bored and have the
new pistons and crank installed (the only part of the job I didn't trust
myself to do properly) Got the block back and reassembled the engine and
installed it.
It was incredible, after assembly and double checking, and filling fluids,
the truck started and ran like a top. Everything was perfect except there
was no oil pressure. I hunted for 2 weeks to find out why. Finally removed
the oil pump and packed it with grease, yes, grease because my friends and I
were going on the assumption that the pump could not make enough suction to
get primed. Reassembled and lo and behold oil comes squirting out the side
of the block.
The shop that did the block work for me had removed an oil gallery plug and
didn't replace it. I didn't notice it. Put a plug in and the engine gave
me another 120,000 kms before I sold it, still running strong.
Like I said, I don't know if this will help you out at all, but has anyone
else done anything to that engine that you may not know about?
