Does that puppy have knock sensors (forgive this narrow minded 20v owner)?
If so I would put my money on that for sure. The symptoms are exactly as
described and they are known to fail.
At least they're cheap at $110/each...

A friend of mine and I have been tearing our hair out lately over his 88
80q. it has the most maddening problem. when accelerating it with "cut out"
almost like the fuel pump is turning off and turning back on, the same
sensation as the over boost cut off in a turbo car, or a redline cut off in
an N/A car.
We can't figure this one out, we have tried a variety of things, like
replacing the fuel pump (old one was getting really loud)
replaced FP relay (old one was defective)
replaced fuel filter (old one was, well old)
new temp sender (two pin on top of outlet on the engine)
This whole thing started when a friend of his who is a mechanic, one that
works on american cars, and hates euros..... "cleaned" the injectors.
He has since that time taken it to a real audi mechanic that fixed most of
the things that were out of whack with it, such as ignition timing, and some
electrical gremlins. but this problem persists.
the "cutting out" or "lurching" or "chugging" happens under more then
1/2 throttle application in 1st,2nd,3rd, and sometimes 4th and 5th, if you
drive with a very light foot on the pedal, it is much less likely to happen.
we have almost ruled out fuel delivery as a suspect, but there are some
interesting things to note about this car, that may suggest that fuel
delivery is indeed the problem, the biggest of these is that the jetronic
control unit was "dangling" behind the dash, and when we opened it up, we
found that one of the darlington transistors was charred to a crisp, after
consulting an electrical whiz friend of ours we purchased a replacement
darlington and soldered it in place. this made no difference, as a matter of
fact, the car runs the same with the jetronic unit in place as it does with
the unit unplugged....soooo...another question, although the 80q is CIS-E 3
, will the computer from an 85 CIS-E 5000 work?
the cutting out almost sounds like the ignition is cutting out. but who
knows....
thanks in advance to anyone who goes through the trouble to read this long
winded post, and even bigger thanks to anyone with some suggestions for us!
Stacy
ps.. if any further info is needed....let me know
