pentosin substitutes revisited - verrrrrry interesting stuff

Somewhere in the archives you should be able to find a mention of a
cheaper alternative to 'Pentosin' that was checked out by one of the list
regulars, I forget who. I think it was a Ford product that they were talking
about.

In the UK the word Pentosin is unknown, so I guess its a US tradename.
We either buy the Audi dealer stuff 'G002' as I call it, for 7GBP a litre,
or the equivalent german stuff branded 'Febi' for a bit less money.

As far as your ZF info goes, they are saying that if you have central
hydraulics (e.g. brake assist/self levelling) then you need to be using
G002/Pentosin/whatever they call it round your way. I beleive this indcludes
most 5000/100/200's. I can understand the need for a dedicated fluid because
they run at 150 bar, which is a lot of pressure in anyones reckoning.

However even if you don;t have 'central hydraulics' you may still need
to be using the G002 stuff.. A great example is my my 87 CGT. This has only
the steering powered by hydraulics and a reservoir with the letters 'ATF'
moulded into its plastic body. The Haynes manual also specifies ATF for all
coupes to Nov '88. *However* there is a sticker on the reservoir which
specifies only G002 must be used and the factory owners manual also
specifies G002. when I got the car it had some rather dirty ATF in it. I
keep it full of fresh G002. There was obviously a change in spec for the
'power steering only' systems at sometime which was not well documented.
Maybe someone else on the list can tell us whether this was truly necessary
for the simpler systems, when it happened and whether these could really run
on ATF after all.
