Yes, that defeats half the point of the relaying - to use heavier, more
direct wiring for the high current circuit.

By replacing all the high current wire (to relay, relay to light, light
to ground) with new wire in the gauge of your choice, you eliminate all
variables (corrosion, thin wires) in the circuit and set the stage for
any other upgrades you might want to do, like higher wattage bulbs, etc.

on the 4k there are some nice 8mm (I think) threaded holes kicking
around near the headlight assemblies (on the rear of the top of the
center support) - use a short wire to a ring terminal and a bolt in
those holes.
