My 2 cents?  Start doing the basic stuff yourself to gain some knowledge on what makes your car tick.  Most mechanics you take a 17 year old car to are not going to have the desire to spend goo gobs of time diagnosing a problem that is going to be complicated by another problem, on top of another problem, unless they are a die hard audi/vw fan.  I remember when I borught my first 4kq to be inspected, the tech said:  "How much did you pay for this?  nevermind, I'm sure it was too much."  It needed new control arm bushings and motor mounts.....Tell me where you can find a car with leather, full power options, as well as all wheel drive for under 4000 dollars.  Do the little things yourself and you will be amazed at the costs you save.  There is a wealth of knowledge here and I know that if you can't fix it yourself, someone here will walk you through it.
