Assessing a shop's integrity

I had a similiar experience with a well known Canadian chain. Both
passenger windows stopped working at the same time. They quoted based on
dead motors. I told my wife, who had taken the car in for diagnosis,
that this was not correct. I worked on the fix myself. When I tested the
continuity between the switch and the motor I discovered that the wires
were broken between the doors and the body in the hinge area. A bit of
solder, electricians tape and lots of cursing and the job was done.

I guess the shop would have been correct though; When they opened up the
doors to put in the new motors they could easily splice the wires and
everything would work. I would never know the difference and they
wouldn't have to call me for permission to fix a more expensive problem
since they had already quoted the most expensive fix.

Cheers
George
