interior and reading lights will not shut off with doors closed on 1988 Audi 90

The interior light and reading lights by the 3 passenger doors will not shut
off when the door contact switch position is selected.
The short term solution is to leave the manual switches to the always-off
position but I think that there is a short somewhere that is causing the
battery to drain.
The chimes sound when the driver's door is opened. I have checked each of
the door switches (by removing them) but they all work. I have removed all
of them simultaneously, but the lights will not shut off.
Any suggestions? I saw a reference in the archives to some sort of central
control for these interior/courtesy/map lights. Can't remember which car ...
does my car have one?
BTW, thanks to those who responded to my query on what would cause the
license plate lights and reverse lights to fail. As recommended, I traced
the problem to the wiring harness that folds sharply along with the trunk
hinge. Four of the five wires were broken! Over $500 Canadian for the
harness but I figure the car is worth it. Ha, who am I kidding? A little
snipping and splicing cost me nothing.
