85 4kq - overheating ...

That seems almost descriptive of what I observed. When I replaced the
themostat, I inserted a hose into the bottom radiator hose with no
thermostat in the system. The flow was not what I would have expected for
an engine that is running(idle) and receiving a stream of water under
pressure.
I was wondering if something like this could be happening, as I really have
no other explanation. I hadn't planned to do the timing belt on this one
yet - expletives deleted!

Is the water pump ok? I recall a situation (not sure if it was a SAAB or an
Audi) where the impeller had become detached from the shaft, so the pulley
would spin, but the pump would not move any water. Normal convection would
cause the top of the radiator to get hot, but not the bottom. I'd pull the
top hose (with the car cold), add an extension to the hose and see if
she'll
pump (into a bucket or such)....

Just a thought.
