Cant get trunk open on 4K!

Out of curiosity, what is the "correct" way for the trunk lock to work?
Mine works similar to what you describe, and has since I bought the car.
However, I've always been curious about why the key will turn to both the
left and right ... and whether the central locking mechanism should have
an effect.
Particularly, I'd like to know if there's *supposed* to be position
(horizontal left or horizontal right) where pressing the key slot without
a key inserted would open the trunk?
Thanks in advance,
