1. Your diagnostic plan sounds pretty airtight...

2. 4kq trannies are very robust... although I suppose one has to break
here and there.

3. You should be able to get a perfectly functional used one for a lot
less than $1k.  I'd start naming parts breakers but I don't know where
you live.  You should at least check with Chris at Force Five though.
