'89 200 Turbo tranny and final drive

It is after 2 a.m. here and my husband is just finishing up with
changing the tranny fluid. It has taken days to locate the correct
fluid, and then we had to get the 17 mm hex bit from a Snap-On
person. That is another story in and of itself . . . . Of course
because the space is so small he almost couldn't get the plug back in
right.
He says he wants to let the tranny gasket sealant set overnight
before he puts the fluid in first thing in the morning. I am very
eager to see whether changing these fluids will affect the noise
which we hear.

It seems that the final drive gear oil was thick so I am hoping it
has not been contaminated with tranny fluid. Also he found a few
metal filings in the tranny screen filter (which was why I told him I
used to have the tranny fluid changed 3 times a year) but he seems to
think that is normal wear and tear.

If that same weird sound is there we will be looking for used final
gear and maybe an automatic transmission for our '89 200 Turbo.

I got a little concerned that the technician at Audi said that due to
the cross contamination they have changed the composition of the
fluids to "account for that" -- given some of my experiences, I don't
it good to trust anyone except the people on this list. If anyone
thinks this is not correct, please let me know. Thanks.

This is is what the dealership sold us:

Tranny fluid
Castrol Dexron III Mercon

Final gear oil for manual and automatic gear box
Audi part number G 052 145 S2
Material number G 052 145 3H

They told us it was synthetic but we don't see that on the bottle.

Cheers,

Fay
