Fay;
Jacking up the car will expand the spring enough that you can get a pipe
wrench through the coils to remove the insert retaining cap. You have to
release the rubber boot at the bottom and push it up to access the cap - the
plastic boot retainer clips to the cap.
Zelenda Automotive (www.zelenda.com) sells the tool - probably around $45.
They sometimes have "used" tools for half price.

My husband was thinking that he had to come down at it from the top.
So you are saying to secure this allen nut (weird nut Jim calls it)
from the side?
He took everything apart tonight and then put it back together so I
could drive the car tomorrow . . . he didn't look at it from the side
when it was apart . . . following Bentley.
Does just elevating the car allow the springs to expand enough to get
through there or does it need some help?
(Earlier he took the wheels off to work on it. )
Thanks !
