i had a chance to do some laps in a new a4 3.0q, as well as in an '02 s3 and
a6 4.2q.
impressions of the new a4: the engine seems to have more low-down than the
old 30v unit, as well as a creamy top-end with a nice snarl. it was good
enough for 180+kph down the back straight, about as much as the s3 could
manage. while not quite as well damped as the s3 (my favourite current
audi), the a4q felt very composed taking esses at circa 140kph. push at
the limit, with tail out attitude possible if provoked. fluent handler, not
the understeer of old, and a nice set of brakes (even if those on my car lit
up after some hot laps). in "sport" mode the tip will allow you to red-line
in a gear which is nice, but i would have liked to drive the manual,
although in "tip sport" mode using the steering wheel buttons gave good
control.
i'd still take the s3 for fun, but the a4 for everything else. it is a
beautifully built car, with better handling, better engine and better brakes
than the old car. can't wait to drive the new s4. i hope the extra weight
doesn't ruin the experience.
