I heard about this when one of the guys here at work drove away from a
car service and was forced to brake hard to avoid another vehicle. His
car swerved violently to the right (towards oncoming traffic here in
NZ)... he came out of that one unscathed, and went straight back to the
manager of the garage, and he found a monkeylad had left the visegrips
attached...!
I very much doubt anyone would manage to repeat that little beauty, but
makes a good story...
I'd be more wary of causing damage to the brake hose, even if well
protected the crushing could be an issue...
Still if your brake hoses are relatively new, then I guess it would be
okay, but I'd expect it to reduce their life expectancy...

p.s. Yes I have done it once myself, and suffered no ill effects...
caliper was coming off for a rebuild so I thought I'd try it...
so I guess it's something I would maybe do, but probably not recommend
to others...
