I once had to remove the film from my front windows. It sorta peeled
off, leaving copius amounts of gluey residue, whihc I had to strip off
with acetone on paper towels. Very woozy work...
On the rear window you are correct to worry about the defogger element,
it can be damaged easily, I'd say anything to avoid razor blades would
be good. Trouble is, solvents back there are going to knock you out in
a hurry... maybe with all windows open and a fan, perhaps, to keep fresh
air coming in?
