Couple'a things to check:

thermo switch on cooling neck

injector seals

idle switch at bottom of throttle body

massive air leak in air boot or ???

I assume you have already replaced filter and gotten all of the crap out.
If it was real bad, consider cleaning the pressure regulator on the front
of the fuel distributor, as they can get rather gummed up.

[ How's it going everybody,I'm new to this whole mailman thing so if I
screw=
it up don't think bad of me. I have this problem with my 87 4kq. it has
t=
his cold starting problem. symptoms: When I go to start the car from
cold=
the engine will turn over and catch occasionally but not enough to start
t=
he engine. so I turn it off, and try again, second attempt gets a little
b=
etter, catches a little more, and sometimes will continue to run but
sounds=
like it just isn't getting enough fuel and it is running at about 400
rpm.=
if I let it go, it sounds like the computer senses this and saves the
day=
by doing something to get the idle to jump up suddenly and fall back to
10=
00 rpm. so... now it's idling, which it does for about 5 seconds then it
s=
ounds like it's starting to struggle for fuel again, the idle falls down
to=
about 400 rpm then the computer saves the day again, jumps it up and
after=
all of this, it settles out and runs fine. I have to wait a couple of
min=
utes though before I take off otherwise it won't accept my gas pedal
pushin=
' and will just fall back into the 400 rpm zone. Winter's coming and I'd
=
like to take care of this before it gets here cuz I know it's gonna
increas=
e the wear and tear on other components mainly the ignition module. (I've
=
blown one up already)by the way huw, you're doing everybody a great
service=
with your website. we all appreciate it.Toby]
