Welcome to the q-list David!
AFAIK, the '85 model year Audi O.E. radios were not code protected. If this
is indeed an Audi branded radio that matches the model on your registration,
Brett's advise is quite sound. (Pull the radio and take it to an Audi dealer
parts counter with proof the car is yours--from the serial # they should be
able to get you the code.) The so called "original one" must be from a much
newer ('88 or later) model year car which would kind of put the brakes on
getting the code from Audi I fear (but worth a shot I suppose).
What with new head units being as inexpensive as they are these days, I
would slap a new AM/FM/CD in-dash in and call it a day if it were me. (It
takes a couple hours of my time to go to my closest Audi dealer and wait in
line at the parts counter.)
