Haven't Audi been building a type 44 derivative in China the entire time for
the Chinese market? I thought that was one of the reasons many new type 44
parts (window regulators for example) are from China now.

Makes sense really. What we should be really afraid of in the US is Audi
building cars for the US market in the US (donning nomex and ducking!).
