rear main seal noise idea

Reading about these two cars both howling (presumably) thru the rear main s=
eals (and having the same malady on the Hangar Queen 5ktq) has got me me th=
inking about this "quirk" again.
Obviously, replacing the seal will cure it- but for those who have good clu=
tches and are familiar with the ordeal of TQ clutch jobs, I'm beginning to =
wonder why, exactly, the crankcase *needs* to be connected to the vacuum sys=
tem. Not knocking the engineers, but it still doesn't make sense to me that=
the crankcase gases *demand* positive ventilation- just that that was an e=
missions fix? Or is there someting else to consider before trying some kind=
of breather filter, and doing away with the big crumbly hose on the driver=
's side of the engine, and also that horrible whistling sound?
"You're a fool and that will never work" comments are fine with me, as long=
as someone can tell me why that's the case.
Regards,
Rob
