Japanese wire syndrome?!

Nope. BTDT as have some others. Two type 44's and a
76 280Z. Regular gas, autobox and AC. The underhood
wiring on this model took a dump. All the insulation
on the wires gets VERY brittle. Just moving them a
little causes all kinds of cracks. Same for the
electrical tape. All underhood (high heat) areas.
Otherwise the wiring was fine. Nice cars, especially
for what they were designed for, but MUCH less
civilized for long haul commutes. Not enough sound
deadening/insulation. Single seal windows and doors.
I replaced ALL of mine. Helped alot, but still noisy.
Also, as with most aluminum heads, these self
destruct very easily. See Chryler 2.2/2.5 or Dorf
I-4's. Also Audi gets a terrible rap of door handles.
"Teamdoorhandle" and all. Next time to a boneyard
look at some of the other car models. I posted about
this a while back. Some types of cars you'll see with
EVERY door handle broken. Yikes!
