Frank, after owning both a 1999 and then a 2000 A8, be thankful that's your
only problem.  At least you don't have to deal with Audi's terrible warranty
service reps.   It's possible you have a failing oxygen sensor on the one
downpipe.  Might consider swapping them.  Also, check for cracks in coil
packs, etc.  You can also use a spray mister on these items with the engine
running and dark out.... look for arcing.
