Bang! A4 battery explodes

On the 98 A4's there was a problem with the 'battery detonate' pedal
being sited too close to the clutch pedal. Covered by a recall ..........
only joking.

The truth of the matter is that faulty lead acid batteries can fail in
this spectacular and lethal fashion. I've known it happen to another Audi
owner, in this case an 87 100CC (type 44) but AFAIK its nothing to do with
the car (although over-charging would certainly increase the quantity of
combustibles present),
its just a battery failure mode, - lots of oxygen + lots of hydrogen +
internal spark - ventilation = BIG BANG.

Makes you look at all those dud batterys in your garage in a new way?

    Be careful out there..
