Can't comment on why this happened.
For many of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this is the start of the cold
weather season. Which means that batteries that could struggle through the
Summer will die about now. Drive by your local Sears and see the line of
idling cars waiting for new batteries.
If you've ever seen a battery grenade, like this lister, you won't soon
forget it. They go off like hand grenades. If you're jumping a battery,
usually your face is close to it, and you're looking at it.
Just a friendly warning that needs repeating every year. Jump batteries by
the book. Make sure you make the final jumper cable ground connection at
some point away from the batteries.
