98 A4 2.8 A/C intermittently cuts out, then heat then cold

Searching archives I see many have experienced similat but could not
find report of a fix other than possibly system is overcharged.  Has
anyone eliminated this problem on this particular model?  What was the
fix?

We haven't spent much time on this one but no fault codes stored and
when we removed controls to check
connections, problem dissappeared (while in shop) so could not reproduce
symtom to diagnose.
