shift linkage questions

    I recently got a 5 spd manual from a type 44 FWD.  It only had one rod
from the shifter to the trans.  In the past I have my hands on several
manual shifters and have not seen one with only one rod.  did I just not
find the other  or was there such a set up?  TIA

     I'm trying to rescue another another audi, 91 200fwd that has sitting
for a few months with a failing transmission.
