what other alternators fit?

I've been told at local junkyards that the early Passat alternators
are interchangeable. I don't know if they have the dual mounting
ears, or if they are 110 amp. It may be likely they are. I think one
would have to swap the pulleys, though. The Passat may have had a
serpentine setup, but not sure.
