Long-distance purchasing advice?

Speaking from personal E-Bay experience....

I purchased a 1988 5KCSQT Wagon not too long ago, drilled the guy for
information and pictures.  He complied and I was happy until the car got
here.  Nothing takes the place of driving it, kicking the tires and so on.
If you can't do that, use E-Bays auto inspection service, it will save you
$'s in the long run.
