This sounds like one of the door switches is not
working, remember to include the rear hatch in your
investigation.

Switch is about $25-30 from after market and is an
improved version. You can JUST change it without taking
the igniton lock out IF you have small hands. Go in
through the easy to remove instrument cluster. Do change
this before the switch sticks in start and wrecks the
starter motor. Good luck on the recall, my '98 has the
exact same part # that is covered but it is excluded in
the A6.
