I loosened and removed the top bolt on the starter by
lying under the car with head towards the rear. If the
car is up on ramps there is enough room to fit your
right hand through the control arm hole of the front
right wheel well and to get in behind the downpipe.
With a short handle driver the bolt can be loosened.

Just make sure the car is secured!!!!!
It is a bit scary to think of the car moving while
your arm is inside the suspension travel area, not to
mention under the car.

You ask...
"How in the world do you get the top bolt loose short
of removing the lower
pipe?
...there is very little room to swing a wrench."

Hi,
You could cut the end off a wrench to shorten it to
where it will do the
job. I used a hacksaw to cut a Craftsman wrench, and
it cut easily.
The bolt is 19 mm which almost exactly 3/4 inch. Look
around for a wrench
you won't feel bad about butchering.

Another possibility is an "S" shaped wrench if you can
find one. Harbor
Freight sells an el-cheapo version that works on the
starter bolt.
Some folks say they can bend their own wrenches to any
shape they want by
heating them up with a torch til soft. But I don't
have one of those torches.

I'm sure there are other approaches ... the above
worked for me.
This applies to all the five cylinder engines.
