Sound is cross between whine and growl

I should take this into someone and have it looked at, but that will
have to wait as my husband is out of work and I am going to see how
good people's ear is over the internet. ;-)

It sounds sort of like a cross between a whine and a growl. But it
is not a grind like a CV joint.

The sound comes from the front of the car. Could be engine or drive
train, but it is not a wheel bearing or
CV joint, as I am pretty sure I recognize those from having bad ones before.

It *seems* higher up than the axel.

It changes with rpm of the engine and also seems to with load placed
on the drive train.
If I run the car in second gear, and then shift to D it definitely
changes pitch.

(I bet someone with a musical ear is going to ask whether it becomes
higher or lower.)

My husband thinks it's the turbo charger.

At first I thought it was in the engine, but today am starting to
wonder if it is in the front, what used to be termed
rear-end (in the back). Differential ?

It is louder when cold.

Would someone give me some guesses as to what it might be? Thanks so much !
