Accelerator Linkage 84 4Ks

I really need some help with this one.
Finally got time to put the new bushings into the accelerator linkage -
4 times, and still can't get it right.
I'v changed the damper upside down, inside out and any other
configuration I could come up with. But kept coming up with a loose
throttle cable. About an inch to inch and a half.
I went to the family album and installed it as illustrated. Model A40,
84,MG 7, SG 21, Illustration 72-10.
Part # 15, the cable, fits into a bushing 18, from the left. 16 is the
buffer, the rear of the buffer has a permanent prong on the inside which
fits through a bushing onto the accelerator shaft #1.
When I hook up the cable and push on the gas pedal, I have about one
inch of movement and the slack mentioned above.
When hooked up properly, is the cable attachment in front of or behind
the attachment to the accelerator shaft ?
My reading of the illustration is the cable attachment is in front of
the shaft attachment.
Any and all help appreciated,
Donald
