Well, from what I know, it's male and hollow.  The reason why it is hollow is so that it can fit around the
shaft of the strut, since you are loosening and/or tightening the big nut/cap with the strut in the housing.

So, I don't think you could use extensions and a socket.  If I am thinking of the same tool you are writing
about.
