1. Your batttery failed, boiled dry for unknown reasons.
2. Everything seems to work fine now.

A possible but not very likely failure is that the regulator fails at
the higher underhood temperature intermitently.  More likely is a
battery cell shorted and the others were overcharged.

I'd just drive it, but then my Audi always breaks down close to where I
can get a sandwich and a beer.
