I would actually 'vote' for 15" tires:  195/60-15 IIRC
I had this size on my 'ex' 98.5 A4 and they performed well in snow,
although the taller sidewall definitely made them 'softer' riding than the
stock 16" tires.

The 'narrower the better' for snow.
