If you don't have the book you can't smear it with your greasy fingerprints
which seems to be an important part of the automotive repair process. It helps
in locating the useful sections as well.
Computers have many great uses, but I have never seen a computerized book that
was as easy to access and read as a real book. The Bentley manuals really are
quite good, given the option get the paper. Theoretically a specially developed
computer program could be much superior to a standard old book, imagine a
diagnostic program linked to inputs from a data acquisition card and a portable
computer. Properly implemented it could be damn useful in following the proper
systematic evaluation of systems. The problem is developing such a thing would
be too expensive and complicated to justify for home use. Although you could do
most of it with LabVIEW or some other program like MATLAB, tons of time and some
inventive plugs spliced into the electrical system.
