Robert,
Be SURE to use a GL4 rated gearbox oil. (Mobil 1 is NOT GL4, it is GL5).
GL4 includes friction additives to aid in synchronizer function. GL5 does
not.
I personally use Redline MT-90, which is the heavier weight transmission
lube of Redline synthetics. (the other, MTL, is like 75 weight). At least
on
the '89 100/200 series (don't know if the 5K's also recommend this) the
owner's manual and Bentley REQUIRE synthetic gear lubes. Finally, I
actually DID use Mobil 1 in the past in my gearbox. BIG mistake, my
synchros basically started to not work, both up and downshifting.
Fortunately
the friction modifiers in the Redline actually managed to recover synchro
function of the gearbox.
