80 Cat Question

Could have been an attempt by prior owner for better exhaust flow. Also may
have died due to too rich a fuel mixture. The core can and do melt down;
and if things are just right can pass out the remainder of the exhaust
system.
Are you in an area that emissions standards and tests? What were the
readings of any prior test? Car should not backfire between gearshifts.
Get that fixed and the cat might last
