pillock

dropped the wagon in for a warrant today. there in the engine shop was a
motor/trans from an rs4. pristine. went in to have a look, turbo's were
new, a lot of new plumbing etc. nice engine btw, you don't realise how much
shorter they are than the i5 until you see them in the flesh. ditto the
6-speed tranny. interesting solutions for oil cooling and very complex
plumbing. this would not be an easy engine to work on in-situ.
anyway i had to know what the story was, so talked to the guys. the driver
had punted the rs4 during the recent targa. it seems this pillock has
lowered the car an additional 30mm, stiffened up the struts, and then
*removed* abs and tcs systems. the skid mark was over 70m prior to the car
leaving the road and hitting a tree (lfs). the targa goes over nz secondary
roads (read: sealed 2-lanne chip-seal with camber changes, potholes and
uneven surfaces) where the very thing you want is suspension movement and
abs.
this guy rather fancied himself as a pilot, but the other competitors were
taking bets from day 1, on when he would punt the car.
there is a new body-in-white for the car in the shop (usd 25k), the rebuild
has cost usd 15k so far, and the pieces have all got to be put back
together. he will have little change from his original purchase price. no
insurance obviously.
also on the lot was a pristine gt2 with 4k kms on the clock. the owner,
another pilot who fancied himself, had scared himself shitless and realised
that he had to get rid of the car.
be careful out there folks.
