Depends, I guess, on if you interpret "popping" as backfire or knock :-)

>From Chris's narrative, I opted for rich induced backfire, though I admit it
could be lean induced knocking, or even cross fire from the plugs as someone
else suggested as a possibility.  Hopefully Chris will post what it really
was so we can learn how good our guesses are.
