'87 5KCSQT - Poor idle while car warms up

Hi all,

I have an '87 5KCSQT.  It currently has a very poor idle until the car is at
least half of normal operating temperature.

Symptoms:
- I have to keep the RPM above 1500 while idling or the engine will die.
-If it dies, it is VERY hard to start.  Only waiting about 5+ minutes will
get it to start.
- Last change I made was to clean the engine using Castrol Superclean &
water.  The problem existed before but seems to be significantly worse now.
-Once the car is at full operating temperature, the problem seems to go
away.

I vaguely remember something about a cold weather valve but don't know
really anything about it.  TIA for all your help.
