To equal the output of one automotive headlight bulb, you'd need at
-least- 10-20 of the very latest "Foveon" white LEDs- they're
incredibly bright, and use multiple dies in one chip. They come
packaged pre-soldered onto little snapboard modules, which among
other things, serve as heatsinks to dissipate the heat from the LED.
I think you can get them minus the circuit board, but then you have
to design some sort of heatsink system yourself.
They cost a fortune($50 each I think, at least), have strict
temperature ranges, and loose half their brightness over time- a
lifetime which is reduced -drastically- as temperatures go up if
they're being operated.
HID is far more cost effective, and it has a far superior energy to
light output ratio(which is what justifies its cost.)
