Stephane, thanks for qualifying your inexperience.
The "Audi engineers knew best" argument never flies with me, if Audi Engineers had their say on the end result of the product without consideration to the financial, marketing, sales, distrubution and ego/upper management factor, you think Audis would look anything remotely to what they have all along? No, absolutely not.
The bore/stroke/displacement considerations were as much marketing considerations as engineering ones.
Anyway, Audi made boring and stroking an I5 very easy, FROM the factory. With bigger bore pistons and longer stroke cranks available basically off the shelf, it makes it a very simple development process.
Plus, it works, in my experience the bigger displacement motors give up little in revving capability and gain much more torque than they already have.
