I am reporting that my recharged bomb has died. I cannot recall seeing a
report of the failure of a recharged bomb here before.
Russell Southerlin recharged this brake pressure accumulator for me
several years ago.
I got about 40,000 miles out of the recharged unit.
Because I could not contact Russ to arrange for another recharged bomb, I
bought a new one from Adirondack Auto for ~$190.
The recharged bomb cost me $50 plus shipping when Russ did it, so I got
about 40,000 miles for $50. I do not know how long a new bomb lasts, but
comparing the $190 new price to $50 recharged price means I could by 4
recharged units for about the price of one new. If each recharged units
lasted 40,000 miles or more, four of them would get you ~160,000 miles for
about the same money as a one new one. That is if you did not pay for
installation. I found it is not too bad of a job, but I like to buy cars
that have low levels of exposure to road salt. I would have gone with
another recharged unit if I found one quickly enough.
BTW, I started receiving a red brake warning triangle periodically while
driving several weeks ago. I did not check the bomb right away.
Eventually I experienced the solid brake pedal. The red brake warning
triangle has not reappeared since I changed the bad bomb yesterday
evening.
Also, I refilled the hydraulic oil with Amsoil ISO 32 synthetic hydraulic
oil. After I drain and cycle out most of the Green Gold, I will report on
how this performs. I had intended to change over before winter, but
somehow I am just getting around to it, so I cannot report on cold weather
performance. Of course Southern Indiana does not really get cold weather,
anyway. I bought 5 gallons, so I could make some available to others to
try for my cost if they are close enough for delivery. I do not want to
ship any repackaged oil. I will be moving to Tiffin (NW), Ohio in one
month so if any Northern Ohio listers want to try the Amsoil I can arrange
it then.
I have shared my experience.
