On any other car maybe, but with the propensity for leaking and weeping
hydraulic fluid that our beloved type 44's have, the amount of fluid loss
to set off the triangle is minimal.  Catastrophic failure as you describe
would be accompanied by billowing smoke clouds and other indicators.  I
ferried a type 44 over 50 miles a while back,  that one didn't even have
a hydraulic pump, the steering was a bit heavier (about the same as any
car with a rack and no assist) and the brakes reminded me of my old Volvo
with non-boosted brakes, far from rock hard.
