Hi Stu,
I just happened to have put my Summers back on my 2001 1.8TQ, with the
original P6000 tires (about 1/2 worn down) on 17" original mags, and I
noticed that the tire noise is much higher than my Yokohama Gardex winter
tires I just took off. But then again, those were soft winter tires, and
these are hard performance tires, which I also happen to have pumped up to
45psi right now, which is really too high. I need to lower it back down to
36-38psi. Next time you check out the car, check out the tire pressures.
Because if the tires are pumped up too high, it results in a firmer ride,
but the tires end up transmitting all the tire noise through the mags, and
into the cabin. Bring a gauge, and lower them back to the recommended
pressures (34psi I think), and I'm sure you'll notice a big difference in
the tire noise.
I did have one other question about your posting though. Why do you refer
to the 1999 A4 as 190 HP? I bought the 2001.5 A4 1.8TQ Sport, and from what
I remember, 2001 was the year that Audi bumped the HP from 150 to 170. So
why do you keep referring to the 1999 model as having 190 HP? Is it
chipped? Because from what I remember, it should only have 150 HP (stock).
Hope this helped explain the noise.
