I had behavior such as this on my '88 5ktq. In my case the problem was due
to broken insulation on the wires as they entered the trunk lid. There is a
small bundle of wires that flexes every time you move the trunk lid. Look
for broken insulation and wires that might cross signals anyplace where wire
bundles move -- trunk, doors, hood, etc.

I would suspect your throttle switch. It senses idle when the throttle
butterfly is fully closed, and WOT when it is 3/4 or so open. If the ECU
does not get an idle signal from this switch, it will fluctuate and idle
high like you describe. Could be a bad switch, or it could just be slightly
out of adjustment when everything gets warm.

Pulling the bulb out is pretty easy from the back of the lamp unit. You
need to remove the plastic cover between the front of the car and the
radiator, as I recollect, to get access to the driver's side lamp unit. I
think it is a standard H4 bulb, but whatever it is, pull it out and replace
with a like bulb. They should be readily available at any FLAPS.
