welding manifolds in the sky

Anyone weld their exhaust manifolds using some of the
more recently discussed methods?  Drill both ends of
the crack.  To "pin" the crack and stop it's spread?
Preheat to 400*F?  To weld it in a condition more
conducive to good "grab" by the weld?  Use "high
nickel content wire"?  Better weld quality/strength?
Drill holes 1/2 the thickness of the material?  V
grind a channel for the weld to a similar depth?  Any
other suggestions?  Also, did anyone weld their
downpipe?  Did it crack at the upper back of the turbo
casting where it is welded to the pipe?
