Question - 1990 Quattro

I have a 1990 Quattro V-8 with 180,000 miles on it.  My problem is that it =
doesn't seem to shift properly (or at all) at times.  I've replaced the fil=
ter and my shade tree mechanic can't find anything wrong.  Any thoughts????
