You can use the shell from the old one to press in the
new one.  You can drive it all the way home and the
old shell will only be in 1/8" and will pull right
out.  Clean around the snap ring and where the bearing
will slide as best you can with wire wheel,
sanderpaper whatever.  This makes it MUCH easier.
Soak it down with the best penetrant you have.  As far
as damaging bearings, ALWAYS press on the portion
being interfered.  For the wheel bearing, it's the
outer race into the housing.  You can remove them
anyway you want.  I wouldn't hammer, but I have.
Obviously don't hit the housing.  Good luck.
