Why is there fuel in my air box?

The subject says it all.  About a year ago I noticed a
puddle of gas under my car ('87 4k csq) in the
vicinity of the air box.  I took it to a mechanic and
he said the fuel distributor needed to be replaced.
He did so.  However, I've still noticed a gas smell
and today saw another puddle of gas under the car
while it was idling.  I opened the air box (finding
that the air filter put in by the mechanic was 3/4
length, rather than full ... grr) and found it full of
gas.

Any suggestions?  (P.S. I've found a new mechanic.)
